THE 1st MECHANIZED BRIGADE AT THE LE LINGE MEMORIAL the 2007/05/24

The 1st Mechanized Brigade did us the honor of his visit to Le Linge.  As early as 8o'clock in the morning it was taken into account by an association guide that drove them to the Courtine, to the Barrenkopf, before ascending the slopes of the Schratzmaennele, itinerary borrowed by the waves of French assaults since the Hurlin and the Courtine.  The military officers went then to the Museum of the Memorial to attend the video meeting.  The General of Brigade SERVERA commending officer of this unity, having to leave for professional reason, pointed out a minute of silence to the memory of the fighters of Le Linge in front of the Monument BARBEROT.  The visit was followed by a visit to the museum and on the battlefield.  The visit is finished by a passage to the cemetery of the Wettstein.

The nature under the stump of an uprooted tree has given back the rests of an of your elders that belonged to the important army of the dead people.
Just like the sea that rejects the shipwrecked men, the mountain gives this regularly testimony at its manner and asks us to go up the way of memory.
Now, coming with this hunter to his last residence, when he rejoins forever his comrades of the Grande Armee of the unknown people, together we want to pay the last tribute to him, and to honor at the same time all those that will remain forever prisoners of the bowels of the earth in the posture where the death has mown down them, so that they will never be buried by the forgetting

Miss Marie BALTHAZARD, young photographer from Orbey and passionately fond of history, has took part in a national concourse " the ways to memory ".
For this concourse she has chosen Le Linge. You can see the result of her work below.
Thanks a lot Marie for the work that you have done on behalf of the members of the committee, and of all the voluntaries of the memorial of Le LINGE.

The Le Linge battlefield
Orbey (68370)

Following them

Le Linge is a place that we know well when, like me we grew in the valley that this battlefield overhangs. The trenches overgrown by the vegetation, the skeletons of still visible trees between the cross indicating where we have found bodies. And then there are these pathes that we follow on the steps of the men that have spent here terrible hours. How can't we be startled to their memory when we passes along the wall of a trench? . How can't we tremble in front of the steps that took them to the fire? How to go in front of the entrenchments where some men have trembled with anguish and cold during the long winters? .

When at school, I have been taken to these places, I have always the sensation of walking on their traces. I always think to these men, no doubt a little older that me, and the shades moving forward in front of me. More I go further between the stones, by the stairs, the narrow trenches, more the History starts again in front of my eyes. And the silhouettes seen seem to me to be the shade of the French soldier ninety years ago.

Having studied the history during four years at the Faculty of Strasbourg, I have understood and red the narrations of battle. But the history is never as alive as in these places to memory, when we walk on the steps of those that have lived through. Thanks to the work of some enthusiast people, Le Linge lives again each spring and permits to all to understand as much the battle that the life of the men that they have got. But for them, our memory of the history would be a deficiency, because done without any emotion that takes us all, when we walk on their steps.
